The Golden State Warriors are world champions of the NBA and one of the most dominant teams in the league since Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green took over the team in 2014-2015 season. They have won 3 out of 4 NBA championships in that time period, each with a different coach. On top of this, they are set to become the first team in NBA history to win back-to-back championships while never losing more than 2 games in any playoff series. Their secret? They practice shooting 30 shots before every game, no matter how good or bad they are at it on any given day.
Attitude
The first thing that comes to mind when discussing the remarkable and record-breaking seasons of the Golden State Warriors is talent. Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green — these guys are all great basketball players. But there’s more than just raw talent that’s catapulted them into stardom and a 73-9 record (as of Dec. 20, 2016). You don’t need me or any other sports analyst to tell you how important attitude is on and off the court — it’s a matter of fact.
Practice, practice, practice
Shooting a basketball well is like riding a bike. Once you learn how to do it, it’s forever engrained in your muscle memory. The hard part is actually learning to do it right; that takes time and practice. Basketball players, coaches and trainers agree on one thing: if you want to become a great shooter, the best way to get there is through plenty of practice and with the help of a coach or trainer who can help with the basics while also keeping an eye out for technique flaws that need correcting.
A great coach makes all the difference
A great coach makes all of the difference. In fact, Steve Kerr’s presence alone has had a remarkable effect on each of his players. Curry, Thompson and Green all improved their three-point shooting by at least 50 percent when playing for Kerr, according to data provided by ESPN Stats & Information. That can be traced back directly to Kerr’s influence.
Coaching means more than drill work
While drill work and repetition are important, perhaps more so is how a coach can tailor their coaching style to specific players. Some players need guidance; others need space. Coaching means knowing your players better than they know themselves. On any given day, one of these guys could get hot and torch an opposing defense for 30 points. So, although Curry may be credited with creating incredible offensive systems for his team, it’s likely his system only works because he understands that none of them need a completely separate set of rules for playing in their offense compared to when they’re off-the-ball or not on their game. In short: he knows his players better than they know themselves, and therefore tailors his coaching accordingly.
Fit into team culture
Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors, has been known to deliver one piece of advice to new players. When you come here, he says, you’re gonna hear a lot about how we do things and how we run our organization. The point is that the team carries out their processes in a very specific way. All players must conform or find themselves on the bench. The strategy is sound. It’s basic human nature that when people feel like they belong and fit into a team’s culture, they’re more motivated and work harder—and that’s true both on the court and off it.
No ego in practice
When you practice, your teammates are your family. Nobody is better than the other. Steph Curry is one of the most beloved players in the NBA, not just because he can get buckets, but because he brings a sense of family to his teams. He doesn’t play out of ego or put himself before the team. He leads by example and is willing to take less shots, when necessary, in order for his team to win. This creates an environment of trust where it’s acceptable for anyone on the court to make plays—and everyone believes they can succeed because they know no one will hold them back from shooting or do anything that would damage their confidence.
