Simple Fixes for a Broken Jumpshot

How many times have you practiced your jumpshot, only to watch it falter during the game? Whether it’s missing shots that used to be in your arsenal or hitting the rim from point-blank range, your jumpshot can break down at any time if you don’t know how to fix it. These simple fixes will help you repair your shot and hit like your old self again so you can lead your team to victory!

Mechanics

The ball should always be centered with your body, and your feet should form a wide base. Your jump shot is often only as good as the strength of your shooting mechanics. It may take time to fix a broken jumpshot, but committing to practicing these simple exercises will help you improve more quickly. 1) Place both hands on top of a basketball. 2) Keeping your arms straight, step forward into a lunge while keeping your upper body still and facing forward (don’t bend at the waist). 3) Hold that position until it becomes uncomfortable or too difficult to maintain balance (around 30 seconds). 4) Restart from step 1. 5) Repeat 3-4 times per day.

Hips

Improper shooting mechanics can lead to inconsistent jumpshots. This could be due to an off-center shot or from not keeping your hips facing the direction of the rim at all times when shooting. Always keep your center of gravity over your feet and keep your hips forward during your shot. Practice squatting with dumbbells to hone these fundamentals and work on strengthening your core so you can shoot correctly.

Extension

It’s important to use the correct shooting mechanics when shooting a basketball. Often, improper shooting mechanics lead to inconsistent shooting and broken jumpshots. To improve your release and create better shots, you should extend fully when you shoot. If you don’t extend fully, you will struggle with consistency and be unable to shoot from all areas of the court. For example, say that a person is shooting with their wrist bent rather than extended; they would have trouble hitting long-range jumpers because they aren’t able to get underneath the ball properly. To fix their shot, they would need to learn how to get underneath the ball so that they can produce a more consistent shot.

Shooting off the dribble

This drill will help you increase your shooting off-the-dribble accuracy and hone your footwork. The goal is to pull up from ten spots in each direction (left and right), using either hand, at different speeds: walking pace, jogging pace, and then fast dribbling speed. All spots should be predetermined bylines on the court. The idea is to make 50 jumpers total—20 pull-ups left and 20 pull-ups right.

Another key to mastering the jump shot is to always allow yourself space to shoot the ball so you can have complete accuracy. If you don’t have space to shoot, you will likely rush your shot, and that can lead to the inconsistent shooting. Practice time and again until you are able to master shooting the ball when given space.
