In basketball, the player who scores the most points usually isn’t the best shooter. In order to become a great high school basketball player, you need to be able to shoot consistently, under pressure and in game situations. In this article I will give you some great shooting drills that will turn you into the best shooter on your high school team.
Warming Up
Before practicing or playing a game, get your body and mind ready by warming up with some shooting drills. These exercises will help you improve your shot and make it more consistent—and will also help to prevent injury. Shoot close to the basket for touch practice first; then add distance until you can shoot from the court’s three-point line.
If possible, start every practice with a shooting drill because consistency is everything when it comes to shooting . A good shooter is a consistent shooter. If you put in the time at the gym doing these five drills regularly, it won’t be long before you are jumping into games as a starter and one of the best shooters on your high school team!
Jump Shooting Drills
If you are shooting the basketball, put in more time shooting the basketball. Reps are very important to becoming a consistent shooter and a great shooter. Shooting drills that you do in practices will help but also shoot around with your teammates to get more reps and become even better as a jump shooter.
Release
Releasing the ball at the height of your shot is a sure-fire way to put more arc on your shot. This is also a useful tip for shooting layups, as you want to shoot them high so that the ball has room to go down. Another reason it’s important to release at the height of your shot: It makes it easier to get the ball up quicker. A lot of players will see they have time on their shot, but they won’t be able to get it up quick enough because they’re just not releasing at the right height.
Follow Through
To ensure a straight shot every time you shoot the ball, hold your follow through. When you let go of the ball, continue to follow through on your shot even after the ball is out of your hands and has left your shooting hand. Having a consistent follow through will help improve your shot in two ways: it helps keep the basketball on target as you shoot and it also improves how quickly you can rebound and get back into position to take another shot.
If you’re shooting with two hands, holding one follow-through allows you to avoid jerking or moving one hand away from another after releasing the ball.
Tips For Shot Accuracy
Accuracy is a skill that can be learned through practice. With consistent shooting drills, like using a hoop to shoot at, you can train for any shot you might take in game time. While it’s important to make your shots as realistic as possible, it’s also essential to know what will translate well into game situations.
For example, while dunking on your own might improve your mechanics and increase your confidence, training with a backboard could better prepare you for an in-game situation where there isn’t always someone ready to rebound for you.
Build Your Confidence with Consistent Shooting
When you know your form is right, and you trust that it’s right, you have confidence in your shot. This confidence helps to override hesitation, which will absolutely hinder your shooting performance. It also helps to establish positive muscle memory and better aim. So how do you increase your confidence in your shot? By finding good shooting drills! Keep reading to learn some of my favorite shooting drills and start building up that confidence.
Goal Setting
The first step to becoming a better shooter is to set goals for yourself. Not only does goal setting get you on track towards your dream of being a great shooter, but it also helps keep you motivated when times get tough. When our shooting suffers we tend to let things slide off, not just in our shooting but in other areas of life as well. Instead if something like that happens take a step back and look at your overall progress instead of letting one bad day or week of practice ruin all your progress.
Every shooter who has made it knows how tough practice can be and can really appreciate a coach who will push them to be their best because they understand how great that feeling is when they do make progress!
Blending It All Together
Of course, you can’t just shoot a million times and expect results. Shooting is a skill, so practice it like one. It’s important to build muscle memory and for that you need repetition. Set aside some time each day for shooting drills that focus on different aspects of your game – including your footwork, or release point, or follow-through – and vary your schedule so you’re shooting at different times every day.
