How To Break Out Of A Shooting Slump
The basketball season is approaching its halfway point, and you’re already in the middle of your shooting slump. You can’t even remember the last time you made an uncontested jump shot; it feels like you’ve lost all your shooting confidence and are afraid to even look at the rim anymore. There’s no need to panic just yet; there are plenty of ways to get out of a shooting slump and still perform at your peak for the rest of the season. Here are five tips to break out of that dreaded shooting slump once and for all.
Reassess your mental game
It’s important to regularly reassess your shot preparation and mental game to ensure you are getting the most out of your practice. That way, you can identify what’s working and adjust accordingly so that shooting consistency will come easier. Don’t try to fix every flaw all at once, because that may just lead to an unending cycle of self-doubt. Take a day or two off from shooting (preferably with the intention of coming back refreshed), observe what worked, take note of what didn’t work so well, then visualize yourself making all the shots you take when you return.
Practice more
Practice may not make perfect, but it makes consistent. All the great basketball players make most of their time off the court practicing—they understand that improvement is incremental, not something that happens in a flash of inspiration. So even when you feel like there’s nothing you can do to break out of your shooting slump, spend some time on the court making up drills or taking extra shots. You might be surprised by how much better you get with just a little bit of work and some practice.
Change your routine
Following a proper shooting program will fix your shooting problems. Shooters that don’t put in their time or are inconsistent with their training see a decline in both shooting consistency and accuracy. This decline is even worse if they are also changing their routine. Consistency and practice go hand-in-hand, so being consistent with your routine is key to seeing results on-court. If you find yourself struggling to shoot like you did in previous seasons, consider going back to your training regimen from past seasons as a way to get out of your slump.
Practice from different spots on the floor
The only way to become a more consistent basketball player is to practice from different spots on the floor. Free-throw shooting, for example, is a great way to work on your shooting accuracy and consistency. If you’re looking for instant results (and if you are then it’s probably not basketball), focus your efforts on practicing shots you know are money—free throws, layups or jumpers in practice. Practice your money shots over and over again until they’re automatic. This will make sure you’re hitting them when they count during a game. In time, you’ll increase your shooting consistency and confidence and see how much better of a player you can be!
Try these shooting drills
Shooting drills are a great way to get your groove back. Use these drills before practice or games to help you get out of a shooting slump. After you follow these drills, take a couple shots at goal and see if they feel different. Once you have completed one drill for a few minutes, move on to another one. Once you have completed all of them go shoot some more! If it is still feeling off after following these drills for about 20 minutes then give it up for that day and try again tomorrow.
Do this simple shooting workout
The workout will seem a little weird at first, but it’s actually based on science and will help you to become a better shooter. The secret is consistent and accurate shooting. How? By building muscle memory through shooting with certain restrictions, like limited movement or spending a set amount of time focusing on one aspect of your shot (like your wrist motion). Follow this workout, and you’ll build new muscle memory that should transfer over to your game play in a matter of days. You’ll shoot more consistently than ever—and shoot better too.
Get A Coach!
The best way to improve as a basketball player is to get an online trainer. There are lots of people who can play but only a few who know how to help you reach your full potential. Even if you are an experienced player there is a lot that can be improved on, and a good coach will teach you how to get better and faster in less time. A shooting slump can happen at any moment so it’s important to know what steps you need to take to make sure it doesn’t last long! This is why an online trainer is so effective because they can actually tell what you are doing wrong and how they would fix it.
