8 Tips for Beginner Basketball Shooters
When you’re first learning how to shoot the basketball, it can seem like an impossible task. The ball goes in crooked or off to the side of the hoop, and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to master it! This article will give you some tips on how to become better at shooting basketball for beginner basketball shooters and first-time basketball shooters alike! Don’t miss out on your chance to get these golden tips from our expert on how to play basketball!
1) Get a Good Ball
If you’re a beginner basketball player, make sure to get a good ball to practice with. Bad balls won’t bounce well and will force you to work on awkward movements that aren’t useful in real-game situations. Some of these types of balls are even very difficult to dribble and do drills with due to poor construction. As a beginner basketball player, it’s better to start off with something as close to an official game ball as possible so that you can focus on improving your shooting form rather than struggling with basic fundamentals like shooting comfortably.
2) Take Lots of Shots
You can’t really break bad habits if you never get around to building good ones. When you’re starting off, getting your shot count up is a good way to build your foundation. While there are some skills (like dribbling) that take time and practice to master, shooting is something anyone can do fairly well with enough shots. Start off by taking more shots than you normally would, this helps identify your form. Even if it’s just 100 shots a day, eventually you’ll find what works best for you and move on from there.
3) Learn Basic Footwork
Whether you’re a beginner or advanced shooter, it’s imperative to have proper footwork in order to shoot your best. When you practice your shot, you should focus on a few basic drills that help get your feet in place to release a good shot. Basic footwork includes learning how to pivot properly, step toward your target, and perform controlled movement while releasing your shot. Once you can perform these basic movements correctly, then you can try some more complicated shooting drills like one-legged balance shots and shooting on one foot.
4) Know your Sport Specific Form
basketball is a very specific sport and every basketball player should focus on their own shooting form. Using great shooters as models will help you develop your own style and get you comfortable with shooting in-game situations, too. Study a few great players who have different styles and mimic their shooting ability whenever you practice shooting. You’ll find that it helps you improve your shot and maybe even get inspired to try new stuff of your own.
5) Get Close Enough to the Rim
The closer you are to the rim, the easier it is to shoot. That’s why many great shooters make their money by mastering the mid-range. This requires them to develop exceptional footwork and shooting techniques because they need the proper form to execute clean shots from close range. A lot of people mistakenly think they can step out beyond the three-point line and still possess those same skills. The truth is that there are a number of factors in play, and even if you master your footwork or shooting form from long range, it will require a different set of skills to be successful from out there on the three-point line than it does on the mid-range two-point line.
6) Practice Makes Perfect, Don’t Skimp on Practice Time!
If you’re a beginner basketball shooter, proper shooting form is a must. And that takes time. Like anything in life, the more time you put into it and the better you are at your craft, the better results you will get out of it. That being said, don’t skimp on practice time! You need to spend as much time as possible in the gym getting your fundamentals right or shooting hours every day to see results quickly. Read More: How to shoot three-pointers
7) Know Your Target and Always Have an Eye on it
Setting a goal to make a certain amount of shots every day and working towards it will help you learn how to concentrate on your shot. Focus on executing each shot instead of worrying about whether or not you made it. For example, if you have 10 shots to make before you go home, make all 10 shots every time. Don’t worry about whether or not you made them in order; just focus on making them all. If your shots are all good, but they aren’t going in, find out why and work on correcting your form until all of your shots are good. Sometimes with shooting a basketball, it can be difficult to keep up with everything, and always having an eye on target is difficult if doing too many things at once.
8) Stay Focused and Be Patient
Shooting a basketball takes tons of time and practice, so don’t give up if your shots aren’t perfect after a week or two. Becoming a good shooter takes years of work, but with patience and dedication, you’ll see improvement over time. The key is to stay focused and patient as you develop your skills, there are no shortcuts. It takes thousands of shots to become a good shooter, so don’t get down on yourself if it feels like it’s taking forever to reach your goals. You can do it!
