If you’re an avid basketball player, one of the most frustrating feelings is having an inconsistent jumpshot. You might shoot one shot perfectly, but then airball the next one over and over again, making you want to give up entirely.
However, there are ways to fix your broken jumpshot and to become a much more effective shooter on the court. Here are three simple ways to improve your jumpshot so that you can get back in the game without feeling discouraged or losing your confidence.
3 Ways to Fix Your Broken Jumpshot
1) Master the Fundamentals
It’s important to note that most players never go back and re-learn how to properly shoot a basketball in game. It’s far easier and faster to put up bad shots in a game than it is to make sure your form is spot on. Always focus on fundamentals and don’t be afraid to slow down a bit when you have time. Here are three ways to break out of your bad jumpshot rut and start making shots again Use The Running Man Drill: This drill will help you master footwork, balance, and shooting mechanics. It’s also one of my favorite drills because it keeps things interesting with an element of competition (something everyone can get behind). You might think your shot looks fine at first, but watch what happens once you run through a few times with other people around. One thing I like about The Running Man is that if there’s something wrong with your shot, it will quickly become obvious as others hit more shots than you do during each round.
2) Analyze Your Shot
It’s important to understand your shot, what works and what doesn’t, so you can make small adjustments. Shoot some free throws, or just toss up some shots after practice. You’ll have an accurate idea of what part of your shot isn’t feeling natural and needs improvement. Record yourself if you can or just pay attention to what part of your shot doesn’t feel natural shooting. Does your release feel awkward? Are you shooting with a bent elbow? Making small adjustments like these are one way to keep your shot consistent and accurate. For example, maybe your elbow is cocked too far forward when shooting three-pointers—and that causes it to dip at an angle during execution, causing you to miss left or right every time.
3) Practice Smart
As players advance and become more skilled, there’s a tendency to use bad habits for our off-season practice. Without an external incentive or motivation, it’s easy to drift back into your comfort zone—but that means you can’t improve. If you want your shooting ability on court to improve, it’s important to practice smart! This doesn’t mean practicing hard—it means incorporating a few new elements.
